Graduation!!!!
yea! Tonight, Myra graduated from preschool. The program was soooo cute! Now its time to tackle the challenge of kindergarten. I dont think she's emotionally ready. But here we go! I need to contact the school people before everyone leaves for the summer and get her IEP set up. SPD is not a IEP worthy disorder in and of itself, so I need to get the IEP set up based on the delays caused by spd. So that's my challenge. I'd like her to go in a regular ed classroom with an aide. We shall see. Each day brings new cahllenges and new promises. I love my daughter! :)

Car seats
Myra is almost 5 1/2. And she is still in a 5 point harness. She is 48lbs, 45inches tall. We found a carseat that harnesses to 65lbs, the graco Nautilus. And after that, we will move to the Britax Frontier, which harnesses to 80. Why? Because kids with SPD need to be moving. They have low tone. And they NEED the pressure and "holding" that a harness gives them. The low tone and need to move is a BAD combo when in a booster seat. The only way a booster seat is safe, is if you sit in it properly. Shoulders back, trunk straight, legs straight down... STILL! My daughter cannot sit like that for any length of time. I get grief sometimes from it.. "Your kid needs to be in a booster. My kid has been since he was 2." Well, great for your kid. The name of the game with any kid, but especially kids with SPD is to do what is the safest and best option for your kid. It's easiest for Myra to be safe when she's in a 5 pt harness. So that's what we do!

Cat food
GGGRRRRRRRR!!! Myra keeps eating cat food. It is soooo frustrating. Not for a lack of regular food. Not for a lack of something to do. Just because. Its crunchy and distinctive. Because it helps those senses, and the "gross" factor doesn't process. But it grosses me out. Off to do a search to see if its truly harmful.
"Let's take a look at the ingredients in a typical can of cat food: meat by-products, chicken by-product meal, turkey by-product meal, ash, taurine. Nothing too horrible, but in general, these things don't constitute a healthy human diet, says Dawn Jackson Blatner, a registered dietitian with the American Dietetic Association. "That said, I'm fully confident that your body can handle kitty chow."

Okay... well, then i wont hound her any more. I'll just close the door and walk away. LOL!
she could be eating worse...

Suddenly, cat food doesn't seem so bad.

Hello, everyone!
Today I begin my blog on living with a child with Sensory Processing Disorder. This is a journey. A journey with tears, happiness, confusion, excitement and wonder. And you are invited to join me on my journey. Myra is 5 years old. She was diagnosed with SPD when she was a year and a half. Myra is a joy, a miracle, a truly amazing person. Myra is a sensory seeker, with delays in fine motor skills, low muscle tone, and challenges in social development. She loves to swing, paint, jump, roll, sing, pretend and talk. She does not like to sit still, have cold hands, eat mushy foods, or play according to another persons direction. She is my first child. Everything here has happened for the first time for me. I am excited, scared and ready to go. Want to come? :)
